The following academic and university-industry collaborative studies and reviews involve the topical application of probiotic strains Lactobacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and/or Bifidobacterium longum for cosmetic (non-medicinal) purposes.
February 2021 - Academic Review
Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Western Ontario
(London, Canada)
Canadian Centre for Human Microbiome and Probiotic Research, Lawson Research Institute
(London, Canada)
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7956298
This academic review describes how topically-applied probiotic strain Bifidobacterium longum has been shown to cosmetically improve human skin (e.g. enhance appearance, reduce moisture loss) while in a deactivated state (postbiotic, not live/active).
April 2023 - Clinical Observation (University-Industry Collaborative Study)
Department of Cosmetic Science, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy & Science
(Tainan, Taiwan)
Research and Development Department, GenMont Biotech Incorporation
(Tainan, Taiwan)
Department of Biomedical Sciences, Chung Shan Medical University
(Taichung City, Taiwan)
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10148562
There were no medical conditions treated in this study. Probiotic strain Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, applied topically to the scalp, was shown to increase hair growth and volume, reduce oil production and reduce dandruff in healthy participants.
September 2023 - University-Industry Collaborative Review
Shandong Academy of Science, Qilu University of Technology
(Jinan, China)
Huaxi Biotechnology Co., Ltd.
(Jinan, China)
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10574390
This review describes how topically-applied probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum has been shown to cosmetically improve skin tone, pigmentation, hydration and the appearances of wrinkles, with the last two effects being more prominent when the strain is heat-killed (postbiotic, not live/active). It also explains how heat-killed Bifidobacterium longum, applied topically, is beneficial to sensitive skin.
As a manufacturer of cosmetic products, not medicinal or health products, PROBIOTIC SKINCARE may reference scientific studies and reviews on the cosmetic benefits and capabilities of our ingredients, but we cannot and do not make medicinal or therapeutic claims regarding our products.
Our products adhere to all industry recommendations in the above-linked research and scientific reviews, with the exception that we do not guarantee any portion of our probiotic cell ingredients to be "active" or "live" at time of use. This is consistent with industry standards for other non-medicinal products formulated with whole live/active probiotics such as yogurt or kombucha. Live/active cell counts in products such as these, ours, and even dietary probiotic supplements, can diminish by two thirds during shelf life.
We list whole-cell counts (minimums) because studies have shown that our selected strains of probiotics provide cosmetic benefits not only when in live/active form but also when deactivated/heat-killed (postbiotics). Our products are not pasteurized (heat-killed), but in testing we found no significant difference in quality or effectiveness after pasteurization.
